Password Requirements for Different Typesof Accounts
Five types of user accounts are available on OpenVMS systems:
Accounts secured with passwords thatyou or the security administrator change periodically. This account typeis the most common.
Accounts secured with authentication cards thathave your password programmed onto the device. Many third-partyproducts support this type of authentication mechanism.
Accounts that always require passwords but prohibityou from changing the password. By locking the password (settingthe LOCKPWD flag in the UAF record), the security administratorcontrols all changes made to the password.
Restricted accounts limityour use of the system and sometimes require a password.
Open accounts require nopassword; the password is null. When you log in to an open account, the system does not prompt you for a password, and you do not needto enter one. You can begin entering commands immediately. Becauseopen accounts allow anyone to gain access to the system, they areused only at sites with minimal security requirements and shouldnormally be set up as restricted accounts.
