Narration: Reliability. In the aviation industry, it is the key element for efficient operations. For Fraport AG, reliability is the foundation that has established it as the internationally acknowledged leader in aviation ground services for over 40 years. Fraport owns and operates Frankfurt Airport. With over 48.5 million passengers a year, it ranks as one of the largest airports in Europe and seventh worldwide. In the past year alone, over 37 million items of luggage were handled and sorted by an advanced baggage handling system developed by Fraport. Martin Bien Vice President Aviation Ground Services and Logistics Fraport is the operator of one of the biggest hubs in Europe, and within the hub we have many transfer passengers and their baggage, and it's very important that we have very good infrastructure for the baggage system. We need everyday high reliability and also good quality. This baggage system we run with Hewlett Packard computers. It's 10 years with a very high reliability and a good quality. Narration: The baggage handling system is comprised of 67,000 meters of conveyor lines that link together 408 baggage check-in desks, 50 check-in points and 14 special desks with 87 baggage assembly units. The system must be able to track up-to-date information for every piece of baggage, including origin, destination, and current location and routing information. Any interruption in service would cause serious delays in scheduled flights -disrupting overall airport operations and negatively impacting customer satisfaction. Matthias Driesdow Procedures and Quality Management, Baggage Services Baggage management calls for a high level of logistics and well-designed systems. The biggest challenge here in Frankfurt is our guaranteed minimum connecting time of 45 minutes. To handle these guaranteed minimum transfer times we have to be efficient. It is exactly on these points why Fraport chooses HP OpenVMS Alphaserver systems, because these systems are a high availability and stability in performanceas a base system. Dirk Rolfsmeier Application Development Our relationship with the new HP is products. You find them in every room. I think you'll find them in every corner, but the two most important parts are running OpenVMS, it's the baggage rotation system and the baggage operational database. The baggage operational database is powered by an Oracle 9i Real Application Cluster running on hp OpenVMS AlphaServer ES45 systems. The Oracle9i Real Application Cluster enables Fraport to run their application using the Oracle9i Database across a number of separate servers acting as a single database. With this environment, Fraport immediately benefits from a significant increase in both system and database availability without any changes to their application software. And by deploying on the HP OpenVMS platform, Fraport can further benefit from a significant reduction in the administrative costs associated with complex distributed data management. It's as easy to manage an OpenVMS cluster of servers, as it is to manage a single system. Dirk Rolfsmeier: The cluster concept, I believe is really the best. Because you can make with it easy the disaster tolerant system. With VMS clustering running in separate terminals we have system and network redundancy as well as data mirroring, And so, if one component fails or one machine runs down completely, operation can continue, and that's important, without any transaction loss. Matthias Driesdow: We choose HP because HP is a quality leader of systems and they've got a high availability in their system and of course the support by HP is fantastic. Dirk Rolfsmeier: The experience with HP global service I can describe in three words. They helped us. They helped us in installing, in testing the Oracle 9i Real Application Cluster. They supported us by the migration of the database from the previous version, and not to forget, they supported us by the migration of our own written programs and applications. Narration: The continuing growth in passenger numbers and the increasing pressure to control costs in air travel are constant challenges for the aviation industry. Fraport looks to HP and Oracle to ensure that it remains the world's premier airport operator. Martin Bien: Fraport plans to extend the airport and in this extension program we have also to increase the baggage systems, and this is a good opportunity for Hewlett Packard to be our partner also in the future. With good products, with good computers and a good reliability, you can be successful.
