Ask the Wizard Questions

OpenVMS editors

The Question is:

We run a OpenVMS network. I am a student (not a sysop) and use it a
lot. Especially for e-mail. In using it I have discovered 3 different
ways of editing. They are (1) EDT, (2) EVE, & (3) EDIT. Can you
explain these editors and their differences as best as you can. I
would greatly appreciate it.

The Answer is:

The choice of text editors is a highly personal and often zealously
defended decision, and the Wizard does not wish to kick over this
   particular anthill.

There are many text editors available for OpenVMS: EDT, vi, LSEdit,
EVE with EDT keypad, EVE with the EVE keypad, emacs, TPU, TECO, etc.

For information on a particular text editor, see the documentation that
is typically included with the editor or the operating system.
