HP 5M: parallel port or JetDirect NIC?

» close window

The Question is:

I am having trouble getting my AlphaStation 255/300 to print via the
parallel port to a HP colour laserjet 5M. Is this even possible, or should I
try to use the Jet Direct card on the back of the printer?

The Answer is :

Please see the previous discussions of using the parallel port (the
LRA0: device) here, please see other discussions of using HP printers,
and please contact the customer support center for further assistance.

The parallel port does operate in various software and hardware
configurations, but the Wizard is not in a position to establish that
it works with the HP LaserJet 5M.

The parallel port may not be (is not?) currently supported by the DCPS
package, the usual means that third-party Postscript printers are
accessed -- see the DCPS Software Product Description (SPD) for details
on the supported devices. Recent versions of DCPS do have support for
  the JetDirect (NIC) card.
