Machine checks after memory upgrade?

» close window

The Question is:

After adding a second memory module (MS430-DA)
to a DEC 4610 AXP, we experienced intermittent
system halts, sometimes within a day and
sometimes a week later. Since the system halts,
there is no crash dump. We upgraded our PAL
code to 5.56 before the memory was installed.

Before the memory was added, we ran for months
with no problem with only one MS430-DA board
installed. We removed the new board and again
ran with no problems. We would suspect a bad
memory board; but this is the second board we've
tried from the used computer vendor with both
boards exhibitting the same problem.

The only hint of what may have caused the
problem was the following message on the
console:

  halt code = 7
machine check while in PAL mode
  PC = 891C

Any help you can give us would be appreciated.
