RAM disks?

» close window

The Question is:

I have heard that you can create a disk in memory with VMS (albeit small)
i.e. RAM DISK
And that VMSINSTAL utilises this ability during its installs.
Is this correct? How do I do it?

The Answer is :

OpenVMS VAX uses an undocumented (and relatively inefficient) in-memory
pseudo disk -- a RAM disk -- as part of bootstrapping standalone BACKUP
from a tape device. (For information, see STABACKIT.COM.)

Commercial and non-commercial in-memory pseudo disk packages are available
from various sources, including Compaq: DECram.

VMSINSTAL does not use a RAM disk.

OpenVMS Alpha does not need to use a RAM disk as it does not support
bootstraps from tape devices. (Nor does it support standalone BACKUP.)
