ARC and SRM?

» close window

The Question is:

I just bought an Alpha 200. I want to run WindowsNT on the system. Using the
documentation and current flash rom won't start the system in the Arc
console I've used the set os_type nt and then init but when I run the
command show config I see
SRM console V6.8-2
Arc Can't find flashrom containing Arc Console. What's wrong here. When I
bought it it was supposed to run NT and now it won't. Do I need another
chip, or is this the second Alpha system that I bought that won't run?

The Answer is :

Certain AlphaStation 200 systems, as well as a few other AlphaStation
systems, are refered to as "half-flash" systems, and have only sufficient
Flash memory for one set of firmware, rather than having room for both of
the commonly-used sets of firmware and consoles. In other words, the
console required by OpenVMS and UNIX (SRM) and the console required by
Windows NT (AlphaBIOS or ARC) do not both fit into a half-flash system
at the same time. You will have to switch to and reload the ARC console
(from floppy, CD-ROM, or otherwise) in order to use Windows NT on this
  system.

Discussions of ARC, AlphaBIOS, and Windows NT are well outside the purview
  of the OpenVMS Wizard.
