Ethernet hardware address via NCP?

» close window

The Question is:

Is it possible to resolve the hardwear address for a decnet node in ncp.

The Answer is :

There are several ways to do so, including the "Hardware address"
field visible in the DECnet Phase IV NCP command SHOW KNOWN LINES
CHARACTERISTIC. This command displays the Ethernet hardware address
for all DECnet communications lines connected to the local DECnet
  Phase IV node.

Various example programs, including one that reads the local Ethernet
  hardware address, are available at:

    http://www.partner.digital.com/www-swdev/pages/
      Home/TECH/faqs/ovms/ovms.html

Various VAX and Alpha systems have console commands or console displays
  that show the hardware address.

The MicroVAX II series does not have a command to display the Ethernet
address of the primary DELQA or DEQNA (and the latter controller is no
longer supported) Ethernet controller, but the system can directly read
the Ethernet PROM using the following command at the console prompt:

     e/p/w/n:5 20001920

Look at the low byte of each of the six hexidecimal words displayed by
  the command.

The Wizard strongly discourages the use of the Ethernet Hardware address
as part of a licensing scheme.
