» close window

The Question is:

Point to Point Modem Connection

I am trying to connect a terminal to a DECserver 90 or 900 using RAD Async
Multipoint Short Range Modems. The setup is as follows

TERMINAL--modem---line------modem--V.24--Server

I am running into trouble making a cable that will work. The connection
on the back of the modem is an RJ45 (V.24).

The card has a DCE/DTE switch. The following pinouts are displayed in the
manual.

DCE Position

TD---XMT pair
RD---RCV pair
RTS-|
    |
CTS-|
DSR---+V
DCD---+V
DTR

DTE Position

TD---RCV pair
RD---XMT pair
RTS---+V
CTS
DSR
DCD
DTR---+V

as well the RJ45 connection DTE(V.24) pinouts are as follows:

1. Chassis Ground
2. RTS
3. RXD
4. DCD
5. TXD
6. DTR
7. SIG. GND
8. CTS

What pin connections have to be made to communicate with a DECserver?

The Answer is :

Please acquire a serial line breakout box, and use it to see exactly what
  is going on here.

Various pinouts are included in the OpenVMS FAQ and elsewhere, including
  pointers and discussions here.
