SCSI and third-party widgets? (Exabyte)

» close window

The Question is:

An exabyte 8200 shows up as 8 seperate SCSI devices under VMS on a
Alphastation 200 WS. I cannot talk to the tape drive at all, but the same
hardware setup works under NT. What am I missin here?

The Answer is :

Third-party SCSI device integration is often difficult and involved,
and is well outside the scope of Ask The Wizard.

As a start, please contact Exabyte customer support for assistance.

SCSI is a standard collection of optionally-implemented -- occasionally
misimplemented features. SCSI is not a particularly standard interface.
"SCSI is *NOT* magic. There are *fundamental technical reasons* why it
is necessary to sacrifice a young goat to your SCSI chain now and then."

This could be as simple as a mis-set SCSI ID somewhere on the SCSI bus,
or it could involve a problem with the SCSI implementation, or this could
be some other (unspecified) problem. There are known incompatibilities
with certain versions of OpenVMS and certain Exabyte drives -- there are
ECOs for various combinations of systems and releases, see the OpenVMS
release notes and see the ECOs at the service website, and there are
reports of problems with the firmware with certain Exabyte devices --
please make sure the device has the most current firmware available.

For best results, please acquire and use supported and tested SCSI
devices, or please expect to spend time and effort performing any
testing and integration work found necessary for the device. "There
ain't no such thing as a free lunch". "TANSTAAFL" Of course on
some SCSI buses, "There ain't no such thing as a free lun."
