Future availability of new VAX systems?

» close window

The Question is:

How long will Compaq envisage that VAX boxes will be sold new ?

We have many VAX boxes connected to aircraft rigs and where funds are
available, we move to Alpha. But in some cases due to in house software etc,
it is easier to stay with VAX.

Is there any future policy ?

The Answer is :

Please see http://www.digital.com/vax/, and particularly the VAX Update
presentation, for information and current status.

Compaq is committed to selling and supporting new VAX options through
2000, and to the on-going support of VAX customers.

There are finite numbers of VAX systems and options remaining available.
The last VAX microprocessor chips have been built, and the fabrication
of new VAX microprocessors is not expected -- thus a finite supply of
available VAX microprocessors exists, and the majority of these have
already been integrated into modules. When the processor modules with
these chips run out, no new systems and no new processor upgrades for
the particular VAX series be available.

There are limited supplies of VAX 7000-800 and VAX 4000-108 systems as
well as of the VAXstation 4000-96 series, while the MicroVAX 3100-88
and MicroVAX 3100-98 series systems are expected to remain available
for purchase through 2000. If you have specific requirements, please
consider placing your order(s) as early as possible.

Field support for VAX systems and new OpenVMS VAX releases will continue
to be made available. Support and assistance in the migration to newer
and faster OpenVMS Alpha systems, or to other systems and platforms as
  required, will also be available.
