Tracking down DECnet MOP requester?

The Question is:

I keep seeing the following error message:

%%%%%%%%%%% OPCOM 30-NOV-1998 09:09:21.56 %%%%%%%%%%% (from node
CHP052 at
 30-NOV-1998 09:09:15.06)
Message from user DECNET on CHP052
DECnet event 0.7, aborted service request
From node 2.52 (CHP052), 30-NOV-1998 09:09:15.01
Circuit MNA-0, Line open error, Unrecognized component, Node

My assumption is that it is a device requesting load of it's operating
system. How do I find out what this device is?

Thanks for your help

The Answer is :

There isn't a particularly good way -- the DECnet configurator module
(see the DECnet and NCP documentation) can typically be used to determine
what sort of Ethernet controller is in use on the device and this can be
sometimes useful determining what sort of device is requesting the load,
and you can potentially use bridges or bridge adjacency maps to determine
which LAN segment the devices is located on. From there, you are often
left to search the length of the LAN cable segment for the device.

Pending resolution of the device identification process, the Wizard may
consider downloading a random file -- a random LOGIN.COM or other file
that the device probably won't even be able to process -- into the device
merely to get it to "shut up" for a while.

Problems such as this can point to a need to keep better track of the
addresses of the devices connected to the network and to audit the
contents of your LAN segment(s) -- the configurator can potentially be
used in conjunction with a database of addresses to detect and report
new devices, with new network devices typically directly registered in
the database through an administrative process.
