RZ29L-VA disk fatal drive errors on V6.1-1H2?

» close window

The Question is:

We have an Alphaserver 1000 running openvms V6.1-1H2. Attached to this is an
external storage works pedestal containing RZ28 2.1 gig disks. The
personality module is the 8bit version BA356X-MG.

We tried to add some bigger capacity disks 4.3 gig RZ29L-VA disks to it. We
can see the devices fine at the >>> prompt and also under vms but when we
goto initialize them we get fatal drive errors. We know that those slots are
working because they contain
ed some RZ28 disks.

We also have RZ29B-VA disks internally on the machine that work fine as well
so we know that our level of OS supports the 4.3 gig disks.

We think it may be the personallity module, can you give us any ideas.

Thanks

The Answer is :

Please contact your hardware support organization for assistance.
Expect to be asked for the (relevent) contents of the error logs.

Also seriously consider an upgrade to OpenVMS Alpha V6.2, as that
release is both supported (with a Prior Version Support contract)
and it has better support for SCSI storage peripherals. V6.2 also
provides tools such as SYS$ETC:SCSI_INFO, which can be invaluable
in determining the particular characteristics of a SCSI device.
