OpenVMS Upgrade vs Install?

» close window

The Question is:

I (erroneously) thought that my VAX 4000-300 was running VMS V 5.5-2. When I
attempted to upgrade to V7.1 (by first upgrading to V6.1) the VMSINSTALL
informed me that I was only on V5.5!

Unfortunately I have lost our copy of V5.5-2 and now I have to do an
Installation of V7.1. Are there any hidden problems in this. e.g. can I use
my original VAX-VMS licences when I have installed V7.1. I plan to use
DECNET Phase IV - again using my origin
al DVNETEND license.

Many thanks

Mike Oliver

The Answer is :

Please see the sequence of OpenVMS upgrades listed in the OpenVMS FAQ
  for the available upgrade paths.

If you perform an installation, you will want to ensure you have your
most current software licenses, and you will want to realize that the
installation will clobber any existing system roots present on the
  target system disk.

If you are asking these questions, the Wizard would typically tend to
recommend acquiring either an OpenVMS VAX V6.0 kit or an OpenVMS VAX
V5.5-2 kit, and performing an upgrade to V7.1 -- rather than an
  installation of V7.1.

In the case of the upgrade or the installation, you will want to see
the software rollout reports referenced by the OpenVMS FAQ for details
on the required versions of layered products.
