Converting from RMS to relational database?

» close window

The Question is:

I have Alpha server - currently running OpenVMS
7.1. We have some non-relational Database
reside on the server (RMS file). We want to
port those non-relation data file into our
RISC 6000 (in ASCII format with delimiter
between each field), so later we can bcp
(sybase utility) into our SQL server. I have
try one ODBC tools, problem you have defined
their record layout - client site and download
is slow because ODBC is utilized with portion
data (with query), not very efficient for down-
load the whole record file. I been told better
off by using some conversion program which
allow me to convert those file into ASCII format
directly (faster & easier). Do you have those
utilty (conversion program) allow me to do that.
Or do you have any better suggestion. Thanks

Ralph

The Answer is :

The Wizard is not in a position to discuss the performance or operation
  of third-party ODBC tools.

RMS files are available in a variety of formats, including sequential,
relative, and indexed. Data records in these files can be text, binary,
or a combination of the two.

To unload the contents of an RMS indexed file into an RMS text sequential
file, you will typically use the CONVERT utility or (more commonly) a
program designed to correctly process the text and the binary data (eg:
floating point, quadword system times, etc) into a text format that can
then be loaded directly or indirectly into the desired target system.
