unreachable printers and Windows 95?

» close window

The Question is:

We have here an DECNET V4.2 network configured with DOS V4.1 clients all
running under VMS V5.X.

On this rather old network , we want to connect WIN95 clients instead of DOS
clients (WIN 3.1).

We are using for that purpose Pathworks32 (V7.1A) with only DECNET services.

It works fine, but sometimes the printers are unreachable for the clients.
The printers are Lexmark Optra R and i'm using the Postscript driver (&
newest driver).

Are there some guidelines for isolating and solving this kind of printing
problems?

Thanks and regards

The Answer is :

The current OpenVMS version is V7.2 -- your note indicates you have
either DECnet V4.2 (which would imply VAX/VMS V4.2) or OpenVMS VAX
V5.5-2. The Wizard would strongly encourage an upgrade to more
current products, you will have far more and far better options.

The particular configuration of the printers is unclear, you do not
indicate where on the network the printers are connected -- if the
printers are directly connected via a proprietary Microsoft Windows 95,
Windows 98, or Windows NT protocol, or are directly connected via a
non-proprietary protocol such as LPR/LPD, then this does not appear
to be a question for the OpenVMS Wizard.

If the printers are connected to the OpenVMS host, then specific
information on how the printers are configured -- and any logging (if
any) that is generated by the failures -- will be necessary. This
includes how OpenVMS is communicating with the printers, as well as
how the Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT systems are
  communicating with the OpenVMS host.

If OpenVMS is involved in serving the printers, please contact the
  Compaq customer support center directly.
