Maximum serial line speed?

» close window

The Question is:

I am trying to set the speed on a the serial
port of a Alpha Server 300/255 faster than 56K,
but when I use 76800 or 115200 for the parameter
in the SET TERMINAL/PERM/SPEED command no changes
are made. Is there a limit to the speed of these
ports or is there an alternate way of setting
the faster speeds. I am using an ISDN modem to
connect to the internet and would like to get
the maximum performance out of it.

The Answer is :

56K is the limit. Faster connections are available via devices
that are intended for high-speed network connections -- the serial
line interfaces and traditional console lines are not generally
designed for and are not particularly well-suited for high-speed
data communications. (These serial line interfaces are intended
for typical terminals and low- to moderate-volume printers.)
