Data Compression?

» close window

The Question is:

How can I compress big files, or better yet, what is the utility to be used
for this?
Can I get that utility in Internet?

The Answer is :

There are various file-compression pseudo device drivers around, and
callable routines such as DCX are available.

Tools such as lzcmp and compress are also available from various
  sources.

There are also commercial disk compression products, DiskMizer and
Squash were examples. (The Wizard is not familiar with these products,
and cannot recommand any particular package.)

Given the general price of extra SCSI storage, this approach appears
both unnecessarily complex and potentially error-prone. Restoration
or recovery of compressed files adds another layer of complexity, and
adds another layer where data corruptions can occur.
