What are files with .a, .b, .c extensions?

» close window

The Question is:

Hello. I am truly green when it comes to VAXes. I want to put TCP/IP on my
vax, and have acquired the OpenCMU/IP freeware (all I want to do is use
TELNET with a terminal emulator).

However, I have no idea what to do with the .a, .b, .c, and .d files! The
accompanying documentation assumes you know how to use these files, which
seem to be archives of some sort.

Can you help me?

The Answer is :

Read up on the software installation documentation for OpenVMS,
  particularly the System Management Documentation.

Please contact the folks maintaining the kit, and request that they
update their documentation to meet your needs.

The VMSINSTAL product installation tool -- the PCSI PRODUCT tool is
a newer approach and is the prefered approach for the creation of new
product installation kits -- is used to install many of the kits for
  OpenVMS.

Traditionally, VMSINSTAL kits will have a single-letter file extension,
starting with .A and working upward to the number of separate component
  savesets.
