SCSI third-party device integration?

» close window

The Question is:

I am experiencing poor performance of a Exabyte EX-8900 (Mammoth) tape
drive. On the same system (ALPHA 1000-A) I get much better performance when
using Windows NT instead of OpenVMS.
I understand that "Support and integration of SCSI devices requires an
extensive amount of testing and engineering effort -- this is one f the key
reasons why DIGITAL devices cost more that third-party devices." but need a
way to improve performance on VM
S.

Are trere any patches available ?
Is the driver on 7.2 different/better ?
This problem is happening with the onboard SCSI controller (QLISP?). What
should I expect if I change to a DAC960 controller ?

Thanks in advance,
Ricardo Pinto

The Answer is :

The behaviour you are describing is exactly what the effort involved in
SCSI testing and integration is intended to identify and address. As
a general rule, no two host operating systems will access a SCSI device
in exactly the same fashion -- OpenVMS requires a number of parts of the
SCSI implementation operate correctly, particularly for multi-host SCSI
  configurations.

Please contact the Compaq Customer Support Center, and please contact
Exabyte support or the vendor for assistance for the device.

Compaq will work with you to identify and resolve faults in OpenVMS
and in the OpenVMS implementation of SCSI. Faults or performance
problems found in the device will need to be resolved by Exabyte, by
the drive vendor, or by the organization that performed the device
  integration.

You will need to identify how you are measuring the performance, what
command(s) are being used, what behaviour is seen, what process quotas
and system parameters are in place, what the exact SCSI configuration
is (on both test configurations), if the SCSI termination is appropriate,
what caching (if any) is in use, and a host of other considerations.
