Hardware problems with RD53 drives?

The Question is:

 
On a Microvax II running VMS 5.4-3 with a RD-54 for the system disk and an
RD-53 for data/user disk. The RD-53 disk that was in stalled in the system
died (drive will spin up on initial power up sequence and then spins down)
any way I replaced the failed
drive with another rd53. The system sees the drive but has it Identified as
as an RD-51 when doing a "$ Show Dev/Full DUA1:" as shown below:

If I try to initialize the drive I get the message invalid drive format as
show below whic makes sense.
 
 DAMIEN> init dua1: test
%INIT-F-FORMAT, invalid media format
$ DAMIEN>
 
So is there away to reset the correct drive model in the dev list (show dev)
that will allow me to initiallize the drive.
 
 

The Answer is :

 
  You will likely need to reformat the RD53 disk drive using MDM or
  other similar diagnostic tools.
 
  The jumpers on the RD53 must be set to an identical pattern to the
  original RD53, as a starting point.  That said, it is possible that
  one or more jumpers were originally incorrectly set, and that the
  signals are "floating" differently on the two RD53 drives, producing
  the different results.  Other causes -- ranging from bad cables to
  poor connections -- can also trigger to problems.
 
  Also note that there are two distinct enclosures, the BA23 and the
  BA123, and the drive configuration requirements can (and often do)
  differ between these two enclosures.  The BA123 enclosure tends to
  have a different drive interface extender module and a different
  front panel module, and this can change the required settings when
  moving a drive between BA23 and BA123 enclosures.  If a BA23, make
  sure the front panel is a MicroVAX front panel, and not a MicroPDP
  front panel.
