Problems with modem hardware?

The Question is:

we have bought 33 usr modems and trying to replace our scholar 2400 modems
with usr robotics sportster 33.6 faxmodems. They connect fine together, but
using ckermit and other products, they will not handshake ok. They also have
a problem with a simplet se
t h/lat xxxxx and then dial the store. Their seems to be line noise and
garbage. Any thoughts? This all worked fine when usr talking to scholar. Usr
to usr is a problem. Thanks in advance...

The Answer is :

There are previous discussions of configuring modems here in Ask the
Wizard, but these would not initially appear relevent to the problem.

Please contact your modem vendor for assistance -- given your problem
description (US Robotics to Scholar works, US Robotics to US Robotics
does not), OpenVMS is apparently a "bystander". Check with the modem
vendor to determine if the modems are operating correctly, if they have
the correct firmware (if any) located, and that they are configured
  correctly.

If you wish to debug this yourself, consider replacing both members of
a failing modem pair with a pair from another model or from another,
and see if the reported problem clears up.
