Devices owned by non-existent processes?

The Question is:

ORPHANED OWNER PROCESSES FOR LAT DEVICES

Having created a remote LAT port on a Decserver,
the device is used to access a device on the
network.

This works fine, but when the user logs-out, the
device remains owned by that users process
(which is no longer a valid process id.)

Could this be the terminal set-up problem or is
this a known problem with an associated fix ?

Many thanks in anticipation of your help with
this problem

The Answer is :

Assuming the process assigns a channel to the target device, and assuming
it performs the standard last-channel deassignment processing, then the
device ownership should be automatically cleared.

The only time when the situation described above tends to arise is when
SHARE privilege is used by another process to access the device, as SHARE
privilege interferes with the normal last-channel deassignment processing.
(This is unfortunate, but entirely expected behaviour.) In other words,
check for other applications that hold a channel open to the target LAT
  device.

If you wish to pursue this, please contact Compaq Customer Support Center.
An example of the problem will be required, as well as a concise
reproducer and the commands and configuration steps necessary to set up
  the necessary environment.
