Starting up DECwindows?

» close window

The Question is:

Really dumb question:
How do I start XWindows on my Alpha VMS?
I am just doing the install, and nothing in the docs tells me how to start
X!

Thanks!

The Answer is :

Once you install OpenVMS and DECwindows and run the necessary (and
automatic) pass of AUTOGEN to adjust system parameters, the startup
of DECwindows is automatic -- based on the setting of the WINDOW_SYSTEM
parameter, the OpenVMS startup will look for and invoke the DECwindows
  startup.

You will want to ensure you have the current version of DECwindows
(V1.2-5) with the current ECO kit (http://search.service.digital.com/)
  applied.

Typical points of confusion: OpenVMS includes base DECwindows support,
including device drivers and such that are specific to a particular
version of OpenVMS. DECwindows itself (containing both Motif and CDE)
  is a separately installed kit.

To enable the TCP/IP transport, see the DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.TEMPLATE
(or DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM) in SYS$STARUP:, specifically looking
  for the setting of DECW$SERVER_TRANSPORTS.
