Reinitializing OpenVMS system disk?

» close window

The Question is:

Dear Wiz-
I have a MicroVAX 3100-80 with VMS5.5 that I need to upgrade to 5.5-2 and
apply the Y2K kit. This system has many files/dirs no longer needed and
would like to clean up the disk space at the same time. Can I do a "wipe
clean and reinstall" for the system
disk ? I have the VMS5.5-2 bin on TK50 media (this is my only option
tape-wise). I am essentially asking if I can reinitialize the system disk
and reload the o/s from TK50 tape.

Thanks for any enlightenment !

The Answer is :

Yes, you can -- this is called an "installation".

Effectively, you boot standalone BACKUP and BACKUP/IMAGE restore
the ".B" saveset to the target system disk. (The entire contents
of the target system disk will be overwritten.) Once the ".B"
saveset has been restored, bootstrap the target disk and complete
  the installation.

Please see the upgrade and installation documentation for details.
