Device MOUNT and non-existent process?

» close window

The Question is:

Looking for a way to dismount a tape drive
after the process that mounted the drive
no longer exists. Dismount /nounload device
does not work. Under vax we had an image
to do this. The only way to clear the
drive currently is to reboot the system.

The Answer is :

The OpenVMS Wizard is aware of a tool that was available clear device
allocation problems -- the device was owned by a non-existent process
on certain OpenVMS VAX versions -- but not a problem nor a tool around
  errant (failed) device dismounts.

Please contact the Compaq Customer Support Center for assistance, and
particularly with information on how Compaq OpenVMS Engineering can
  reproduce this particular error.

If this is a question of device ownership, ensure that there are no
processes with SHARE privilege overriding the exclusive access expected
with devices such as tapes and terminals. Failure to correctly use
SHARE privilege can lead to problems of "dangling" ownership. (There
are no particularly reasonable fixes for the underlying situation that
is involved with processing access using SHARE, as well.)

The OpenVMS Wizard will assume that the mandatory ECO kits among the
various available ECO kits for V7.1 have all been applied, and that an
upgrade to V7.1-2 has been considered.
