DECnet applications over IP network?

» close window

The Question is:

Hello,

We support multiple business units over WAN links currently with DECNET and
are moving to a TCP/IP network. We currently use various DNA applications
such as SUBMIT /REMOTE, VMSMAIL, proxies etc. We currently use TCP/IP
services for VMS and DECNET Phase I
V. We don't want to upgrade to DECNET-Plus (for DECnet over TCP/IP), is it
possible to still use those applications with our existing setup?

Regards,
Adrian

The Answer is :

Services that require DECnet require a network transport supported by
DECnet -- DECnet-Plus will operate over an IP link, but DECnet Phase IV
  will not.

Alternatives include the use of SMTP mail.

Basic TCP/IP communications do not provide a reliable way of determining
the remote username as part of the connection, so proxies are a difficult
proposition. (DECnet over IP does provide this.)
