Help adding SCSI disk to OpenVMS system?

» close window

The Question is:

I need to add a 4.5 gig scsi drive to a clients alpha 800 server. The drive
is on lun 0 id 2 on the scsi chain.

What can I do to make the existing files system on the server use this drive
for more space?

The other drive is a 2.1 gig and I would like to use them together.

The Answer is :

The OpenVMS Wizard would strongly encourage anyone supporting an
OpenVMS system to have access to and to read the existing OpenVMS
manuals. Particularly the system management documentation.

You will have to choose if you want to continue to use the existing
disk in conjunction with the new disk, or if you want to move the
contents of the existing disk over to the new disk.

If the former, you will want to learn more about MOUNT and similar
tools, and the operation of SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM.

If the latter, you will want to learn more about using BACKUP/IMAGE
to transfer the contents, about the operation of SYSTARTUP_VMS.COM
and MOUNT and similar tools, and -- if you do not want to swap the
SCSI addresses for the disks -- learn more about resetting the Alpha
console environment variable that controls the default boot device.

In any case, you may/will also end up moving application or user
directories across the available volumes. This can involve finding
and replacing references to physical disks with user- or application-
specific logical names, and setting up the logical name(s) for the
  current storage configuration.

  As for other related considerations:

o System disks are not supported in bound-volume sets (MOUNT/BIND).

o Shadowsets do not support disparate devices, and do not provide
      additional storage (MOUNT/SHADOW).

o OpenVMS does not provide a mechanism that links the file
system together analogous to the links possible on various
UNIX systems. (OpenVMS expects applications to deal with
the disk volume boundaries, and to be configured to know
and to use the appropriate physical disk(s) and directories
      to meet application requirements.)

If you require assistance in connecting and configuring the physical
device, or in troubleshooting any resulting errors, please contact
your hardware support organization directly, or contact the Compaq
  Customer Support Center directly.
