OpenVMS on Third-party platforms?

» close window

The Question is:

As NT is some kind of a child of OpenVMS and is offering a HAL (Hardware
Abstraction Layer):
Is there a chance to get sometimes a HAL specification for OpenVMS ?
With a HAL spec it should be possible that any compliant hardware by any
vendor should be able to run OpenVMS.

The Answer is :

OpenVMS does not particularly have a HAL-like layer. While there are
similarities between Compaq OpenVMS and Microsoft Windows NT, there are
  also many differences.

If support of OpenVMS on third-party Alpha hardware is of interest, then
some knowledge of the Dynamic System Recognition (DSR) console mechanisms
and of the third-party bootstrap support (in OpenVMS Alpha V7.1-1H2, and
improved in V7.1-2 and later) would certainly be of use.
