The Question is: I have taken over a Digital OpenVMS network. The Digital LA424 line printer failed and the buying people bought an Epson dotmatrix (LQ-2080) line printer as a replacement. Do Digital have the neccessary drivers availible for downloading, so that I can run an Epson dotmatrix line printer, and in which directory in the OpenVMS system should the driver exist in at the moment. The Answer is : OpenVMS does not have a general concept needing a special printer driver for a particular printer -- OpenVMS provides drivers for supported serial line controllers, and assumes that the printers "behind" these controllers will behave as a normal serial device. Most any serial printer can be used as a "dumb" output device, without need for a specific driver. Various features and capabilities can be established on the print queue via constructs such as forms and via device-specific entries in a device control library. These would include sending along information to the printer to switch it over into a particular device-specific mode, to reset the printer, and to handle various other host-relevent events.
