New firmware, problems with old DECwindows?

» close window

The Question is:

I have an Alpha 3000 model 500 with
2 external scsi drives which I use
to boot 2 different versions of OpenVMS.
One disk is loaded with 6.1 and the
other is loaded with 7.1.

I installed 6.1 first and the DecWindows
login screen was presented normally
at the end of the boot process.

When I installed 7.1 onto the second drive,
I had to upgrade the firmware to v7.0.
After doing so, I successfully installed
vms 7.1.

The next time that I tried to boot the
first disk loaded with 6.1, the
Decwindows login screen was no longer
displayed at the end of the boot process.

The "X" cursor is displayed for a few moments
and a gray bar appears at the bottom edge
of the screen, flashes once and hangs.

Do you know what can be done to resolve
this situation?

Thanks

The Answer is :

Please check for and apply the available ECO kit for the version
of DECwindows in use -- DECwindows Motif V1.2-3, V1.2-4, or V1.2-5.

The Customer Support Center will likely require relevent information
from the SYS$MANAGER:DECW$*.LOG file -- problems with the DECwindows
startup are generally logged in this file -- as well as information
  on the DECwindows version.

A less desirable alternative would be a firmware downgrade.

The OpenVMS Wizard would recommend an upgrade to OpenVMS Alpha V6.2,
if that is possible -- support for OpenVMS V6.1 ended some time ago,
and ECO kits (for new problems) are not typically available.
