OpenVMS Clusters over IP network? (SCS)

» close window

The Question is:

Is there such a thing as TCP/IP Clusters for OpenVMS? I can't find it, but
I though I read in one of the VMS docs that you could distribute members of
an OpenVMS cluster across the internet.

The Answer is :

Both DECnet and TCP/IP Services provide the ability to operate within
a cluster, and (typically more importantly) the ability to be configured
to distribute the network connection load across nodes within a cluster.

An OpenVMS Cluster can not and does not operate over IP. The core
protocol underneath an OpenVMS Cluster is System Communications
Services (SCS). SCS does not operate over IP, nor over DECnet.
Disk services, tape services, distributed lock management services,
and intra-cluster communications (ICC) all operate over SCS.

Distributed OpenVMS Cluster configurations are possible and are
supported over various communications links -- all SCS paths must
have latency and performance equal or better than that typical of
a one megabyte per second Ethernet network. Configurations spanning
distances of hundreds of kilometers are fully supported.

DECnet-Plus can form connections over IP.

Specific information on supported OpenVMS Cluster configurations is
available in the OpenVMS Cluster Software Product Description (SPD).
