Telnet Printing Problems? (blank pages)

» close window

The Question is:

Mr. Wizard,

I'm installing a new OpenVMS Alpha 7.1-2 system using TCP/IP to print to our
HP LaserJets and I'm getting blank pages at the begining of every print job
using PCL command modules. We have DIGITAL TCP/IP version 4.2 and the
queues are configured like so:

$ sh que/all/full LSR05*
Printer queue LSR05, idle, on EXAVAX::"UCX$QUEUE:LSR05_lpd",
mounted form LANDSCAPE (stock=DEFAULT)
  <HP LJ5SI in Production Floor>
  /BASE_PRIORITY=4 /DEFAULT=(FORM=DEFAULT) /LIBRARY=HPLJPCL Lowercase
  /OWNER=[SYSTEM] /PROCESSOR=UCX$TELNETSYM /PROTECTION=(S:M,O:D,G:R,W:S)
/RETAIN=ERROR

Server queue LSR05_LPD, idle, on EXAVAX::, mounted form DEFAULT
  /BASE_PRIORITY=4 /DEFAULT=(FEED,FORM=DEFAULT) /OWNER=[SYSTEM]
  /PROCESSOR=UCX$LPD_SMB /PROTECTION=(S:M,O:D,G:R,W:S) /RETAIN=ERROR

The form I'm using is called PORTRAIT:

Form name Number Description
--------- ------ -----------
PORTRAIT (stock=DEFAULT) 2 PORTRAIT
    /LENGTH=66 /MARGIN=(BOTTOM=6) /SETUP=(PCL$PORTRAIT) /STOCK=DEFAULT
/TRUNCATE /WIDTH=80

This is the PCL$PORTRAIT module:

<ESC>&l2a0o7.27C<ESC>(s0p10h3T

Postscript files and any file sent to the DEFAULT form do not produce the
blank page. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
David Pitts

P.S. - Second question.

I must confess that I have no familiarity with TCP/IP queues. The queues
were originally installed for my group by the corporate MIS guys and I have
no documentation other than the Internet. I installed a queue of my own
using the command in your FAQ pa
ge at MGMT6. That configuration and queue above seem to have problems when
jobs are pending. MIS' server queues will crash out and the config from
MGMT6 will halt for several minutes before continuing. MGMT6 also makes
refernce to a utility called DCPS
as a "better alternative". Could you briefly tell me what the pros and
cons are of TCP/IP queues?

Much thanks.......Dave

The Answer is :

First, move to TCP/IP Services V5.0A.

Then review the various blank-pages discussions here in Ask The Wizard,
and review the discussions of HP firmware requirements (for specific HP
printer models). If the problems persist with V5.0A and the various
discussions do not apply, then please contact the Compaq Customer
  Support Center directly.

DCPS (DECprint) is the prefered mechanism to connect to Postscript
  printers.
