TCP/IP FTP and External Authentication? (Security)

» close window

The Question is:

Scene 1.
 VMS 7.1-2 running pathworks (advanced server?)ver 6.0B and UCX 4.2 eco 2.
Usernames are made the same with the NT servers and external authentication
is turned on. Users are happy one username and password, life is good.

Scene 2.
User X complains that ftp file access doesn't work. Followed shortly by
users Y and Z.

The chase.
FTP login does not work with an externally authenticated account. Is there
a way to make it so?

The Answer is :

FTP presently does not support external authentication -- FTP uses
the OpenVMS password mechanism, so it should use the OpenVMS username
and the OpenVMS password (both stored in SYSUAF) for its access control.
(FTP presently also has explicit requirement for uppercase passwords.)

Also check or breakin evasion and password expirations.

As a general note, please move to TCP/IP Services V5.0A or to the current
ECO for V4.2, and check for and apply available OpenVMS ECO kits such as
  ALPLOGI04_071 and VAXLOGI03_071.
