Upgrading VAX Unibus configurations?

» close window

The Question is:

I'm researching upgrading a VAX 11/780 running VMS version 4.7 to a new
system. System is the host system for a flight simulator so uni-bus
required. Any suggestions would be helpful.

The Answer is :

You need to determine specifically why the Unibus is required, and then
determine if there are any alternatively approaches. For instance, the
DR11-series interface (eg: DR780) is one of the more common interfaces
for communications such as this, and there are various DR-compatible or
DR-similar device controllers for various buses available (eg: DRB32 on
  BI, DRV11, DRQ3B, and DRQ11 on Q-bus).

If you (still/must) require a Unibus, you will be limited to a VAX 6000
or VAX 7000 series with a Unibus option (DWMUA-AA/AB) (as the newest VAX
systems), and you will need to determine if the specific Unibus device
driver(s) can be gotten to operate in this new environment. Various of
the older VAX 8000 series can also support Unibus.
