Printing: Queuing vs Spooling?

» close window

The Question is:

Is there a way to specify the default 'spool' device for print ques. I manually
specify it with the set device/spool command, but I would like to define a
 logical instead.

The Answer is :

The spool area is an area of file storage used to buffer the data sent
directly to the spooled (printing) device. It is not used for the data
  queued to the (printing) device.

Direct access to the printer can be performed via an application program
that directly opens the device associated with the printer, or via direct
access to the printer using such commands as COPY. For example:

    COPY printfile.ext LPA0:

The spool area is not of particular interest for operations via a print
queue, as these operations do not need nor use the intermediate storage
  provided by spooling.

The default spool device is SYS$DISK, and the usual approach for changing
this is via the SET DEVICE/SPOOLED qualifer. The OpenVMS Wizard is not
aware of any current plans to provide an alternative (default) device
(other than SYS$DISK) for spooling, but this is an interesting idea.
