How do I change the system console from graphics to serial while running vms?
 

The Answer is :

 
  You don't.
 
  More specifically, to change the system console you must shut down the
  OpenVMS system, toggle the setting of the CONSOLE console environment
  variable from GRAPHICS to SERIAL, connect the serial console to the
  appropriate serial port for the Alpha system, and then reboot the
  system.
 
  You can, of course, also disable console OPCOM messages sent to the
  console window (if your system shares the console with the graphics
  console display) per directions in the FAQ and (if it is not already
  running) you can also start up the console window application or set
  up a DECterm terminal to receive OPCOM messages.  For details on this
  console message window application, see the DECW$CONSOLE_SELECTION
  setting in SYS$MANAGER:DECW$PRIVATE_APPS_SETUP.COM.
