Troubleshooting Disk Storage Errors?

» close window

The Question is:

We suspect developing HDD problems on our
workstation. Are there any tools/utilities
in OpenVMS to check the integrity of the

The Answer is :

Please contact your hardware service organization for assistance.
Additional details of the hardware and the storage configuration,
and of your reason(s) for your suspicion(s), will be required.
As disk devices on OpenVMS will generally represent themselves as
completely error-free (and will perform bad-block replacement),
increasing numbers of disk errors visible in the error log or in
files tends to imply an impending failureof the storage device.
The OpenVMS Wizard would tend to consider reinitialization of the
disk -- immediate archiving of the data, and an INITIALIZE followed
by a BACKUP/IMAGE restoration to write to all sectors of the disk,
and failing that the complete replacement of the disk.
Writing to all sectors of the disk will force bad-block replacement
on questionable sectors -- the replacement of a suspected bad-block
(from a pool of disk blocks reserved for this purpose) occurs when
  the block is (re)written.
For information on the DECevent and Compaq Analyze error analysis
tools, please see the pointers in the OpenVMS FAQ.
Other problems -- SCSI bus configuration and termination problems,
an over-long SCSI bus, bad storage firmware, etc -- can potentially
  mimic storage errors.
