The Question is:

How does DCL SEARCH scan a file so quickly? I can search a 400,000 block file
for a string in 20 seconds with SEARCH...slurping the whole file into PERL
 takes 6 or 7 minutes.

Got any hints on making the PERL faster?

The Answer is :

Without seeing the code, the OpenVMS Wizard can only assume that this
is a result of Perl being implemented as an interpreter, with SEARCH
  as an executable image.

Please check with the Perl gurus on the Perl mailing list for suggestions.
(See the FAQ for pointers.) Expect to be asked for the code involved.
