Migrating to OpenVMS Alpha?

» close window

The Question is:

I have to migrate users and groups from a vax system to an alpha. Is there any
procedure to export/import the list of users with their privileges and logicals?

The Answer is :

Upgrade your OpenVMS VAX system to the equivalent OpenVMS Alpha
If feasible, temporarily cluster the OpenVMS VAX system with the
OpenVMS Alpha system -- this greatly eases the effort involved in
the migration, and permits direct access to the existing files and
tools. This approach also permits you to migrate in an incremental
fashion, with access to OpenVMS VAX images and tools remaining as
  long as required.
You can transfer the system authorization database directly across:
SYSUAF, RIGHTSLIST, etc., are fully compatible across similar OpenVMS
versions. (Be careful to preserve the identifier and UIC binary values
when moving to the new environment, if you choose this approach -- the
binary values of these are stored on a plethora of objects within the
  OpenVMS system environment.)
DCL procedures and such that that establish logical names can normally
be moved directly across with no changes, though a review of the
capabilities and the structure of LOGIN, SYLOGIN, and related DCL
  procedures is advisable.
Also review the associated documentation in the OpenVMS documentation
set. Here are some of the titles that have been available:
