Standalone BACKUP for OpenVMS Alpha?

» close window

The Question is:

Just moved from VAX/VMS 6.2 to ALPHA/VMS 7.2.1

Need detailed information on doing standalone
backup. I found some info in system managers book, but would like some
detailed info. How to boot the CD, which cd, etc.

thanks,
ray bennett

The Answer is :

The OpenVMS VAX concept of a very limited, purpose-dedicated, standalone
bootable environment dedicated entirely to BACKUP -- the standalone
BACKUP utility -- does not exist in the OpenVMS Alpha operating system
  environment.

OpenVMS Alpha uses a full bootable OpenVMS environment provided on
the CD-ROM distribution media, or a full bootable environment
created on local CD-ROM or magnetic media:

    $ @SYS$SYSTEM:AXPVMS$PCSI_INSTALL_MIN.COM

As a highly-detailed guide to this environment, follow the same steps
utilized to bootstrap the OpenVMS Alpha distribution media, and use
the menu system to exit to the $$$ DCL prompt. Mount your target
disk(s) using MOUNT commands, and invoke the standard BACKUP (or
BACKUP$MANAGER) commands to perform the target disk BACKUP.
