OpenVMS Cluster and Shared RMS File Access?

» close window

The Question is:

We are getting 4 new ES40 servers, running OpenVMS V7.3...Our current platform
has a 6 node VAX cluster running VMS 5.5-2....
1. Can we access data in RMS files on the VAX, from the ES40's?
2. Can we access data in RMS files on teh ES40 from the VAX?

The Answer is :

SYSUAF and other core RMS files used by OpenVMS are explicitly shared
across all cluster members, thus the answer to both your questions is
clearly "yes" -- fully distributed RMS file access is expected across
  all OpenVMS Cluster member nodes.

If you upgrade your OpenVMS VAX systems to a more recent version, you
can cluster the systems together -- this would be the salient restriction
involved here, as OpenVMS VAX V5.5-2 is simply too old to be a supported
configuration for clustering with OpenVMS Alpha V7.3. (Please see the
OpenVMS FAQ for the available OpenVMS VAX upgrade paths.)
