Third-party (parallel) printing? (Epson)

» close window

The Question is:

We would like to replace the LA-310 connected to our Alpha Server 300 4/266
through parallel port LRA0: with an Epson LQ-2170. Just swapping the printers
sort of works, except (a) there's quite a few seconds delay before printing
 begins and (b) the print
er doesn't seem to print the last few lines until you press the
linefeed/formfeed button. Hooking this printer to a PC booted to a DOS prompt
and executing dir > lpt1: starts printing immediately and finishes completely.
Could it be a VMS device setting

Alpha2> sh printer LRA0:

Printer LRA0:, device type LP11, is online, record-oriented device, carriage
    control.

The Answer is :

Please move to a supported OpenVMS version and please apply any
available parallel port ECO kit(s) for the OpenVMS version of
  the LRDRIVER driver in use.

  Existing topics include (440), (689), (976), (5031), (6329),
  (6869), and (7171).

For the requirements of and assistance with the integration of
third-party devices (including printers), please contact the
device vendor -- there are several different protocol signaling
schemes used for parallel printing, and the printer vendor will
know the specifics of the particular printer.

For information on the supported (Postscript) printers, please
  see the DCPS documentation.

The OpenVMS Wizard normally recommends network-based printing
over parallel-based printing. Due to the various schemes for
parallel printing, OpenVMS Wizard does not normally recommend
  the use of parallel printers.
