BACKUP, Device Names, Logical Names?

» close window

The Question is:

How can I restore an image backup of a system disk of a server onto the system
disk of another server if the two physical disk names are not the same (e.g.
 from Dra0 to Dkb0) ?
Do I need to rename the target server system disk at the physical/SCSI level?
Thank you in advance

The Answer is :

The OpenVMS BACKUP utility does not particularly regard the device
name with any particular interest for any BACKUP operations.

The device geometry is of interest solely when performing the
BACKUP/PHYSICAL operations, but as the vast majority of BACKUP
operations do and properly should use the BACKUP/IMAGE qualifier
for whole-disk operations, this caveat does not apply.

The application-level contents of the system disk may well contain
embedded references to the device name. These must be changed. If
you do need to SEARCH for and change explicit physical device name
references within the images, data files, and/or application command
procedures, the OpenVMS Wizard would strongly encourage you to learn
about and to use the logical name mechanisms. This solely so that
you do not have to go through the effort again -- OpenVMS itself
specifically uses logical names to avoid any requirement to embed
  physical device names.

Please read the available documentation for BACKUP, and please
read and understand the OpenVMS System Management documentation.

The OpenVMS documentation website is available via a pointer in
  the OpenVMS FAQ.
