SCSI hardware hot-removal reconfiguration?

» close window

The Question is:

Can i remove a tape robot on openvms v7.2-2 without power down of the machine?

The Answer is :

So you wish to disconnect a SCSI tape device from an active host and
potentially active SCSI bus, with assurances that there will be no
bus transients and no bus corruptions, and no disruptions or problems
when the device disappears from underneath the host device drivers and
host tape loader software? Sorry, but you already know the answer.

Can you do this? Physically, yes. Is this certain to work? No.

There are certain configurations where SCSI buses can be explicitly
quiesced for hardware swaps, but -- even with the hardware-level
ability of certain available SCSI controllers to quiesce the SCSI
buses available -- device removals are generally not supportable
  and not supported.

For general information on SCSI, see the SCSI specifications and a
few topics here including (4050) and (4097). And please contact
your hardware support organization for assistance with this and
  other related hardware support questions.
