Advanced Server and Active Directory?

» close window

The Question is:

We are running Advanced Server for OpenVMS, V7.3 (no patches), and it is
currently performing the role of BDC in an NT4.0 domain.

Our intention is to replace the NT4.0 PDC with a Windows 2000 (or 2003) server,
and move to active directory. (we have another W2K server acting as a member
 server in the domain also).

Can our current version of advanced server (7.3)for OpenVMS participate in a
W2K domain? Can the Alpha be demoted from BDC status? Can the Alpha
participate as more than a member server? Are there licensing considerations
that I need to be aware of to
make this move? Can you recommend a doumentation source for guidance?

The Answer is :

  * Can our current version of advanced server (7.3) for OpenVMS
    participate in a W2K domain?

Yes. For details on current support, please see the Advanced Server
website, available via the OpenVMS website.

  * Can the Alpha be demoted from BDC status?

The term demote is typically used to describe the transition from PDC to
BDC. If you are asking if the BDC in the Windows NT 4 domain can be
transitioned to a member server in a Windows 2000 domain, the answer
  is yes.

  * Can the Alpha participate as more than a member server?

OpenVMS running Advanced Server can be a BDC in Mixed Mode. It can
only be a member server in Native Mode. The OpenVMS Wizard encourages
you to transistion to Mixed Mode and stabilizing your domain in that
configuration, then transition your BDCs to member servers prior to a
final step of transitioning to Native Mode.

  * Are there licensing considerations that I need to be aware of to make
  this move?

Assuming you have valid licenses for your present environment, no.

  * Can you recommend a doumentation source for guidance?

The Advanced Server Administrators Guide and the release notes for
Advanced Server V7.3 will have discussion of Windows 2000 interoperability.

Please realize that OpenVMS Alpha 7.2-1 is not supported.

Please move to Advanced Server V7.3, and please get latest ECO kits.
