AlphaServer 2100 Processor Upgrades?

» close window

The Question is:

Can you upgrade AlphaServer 2100 4/200's?
We would like to upgrade from EV4 to EV56
for Oracle reasons. If such an upgrade kit exists, what are the costs?

The Answer is :

The OpenVMS Wizard would replace this box with a newer (new(er) or used)
AlphaServer, and would not attempt an in-cabinet upgrade of something
as old as the AlphaServer 2100 series -- even if it were possible to
upgrade to an EV56 series processor module, which it is not.

The fastest Alpha microprocessor that is supported by OpenVMS within
either the AlphaServer 2100 or the AlphaServer 2100A series enclosures
is the 300 MHz EV5 processor module. No EV56.

Even within the available options, the in-cabinet approach will probably
be roughly comparable or potentially rather more expensive in terms of
parts and labour and acquisition than would a complete replacement Alpha
system, and a replacement Alpha system using the EV67, EV6 or EV56 Alpha
microprocessor will provide significantly higher performance.

The OpenVMS Wizard would also typically not seek to salvage the storage
from the AlphaServer 2100 or AlphaServer 2100 series, prefering to use
newer and faster and more compact storage found on the AlphaServer DS10
series, on the AlphaStation XP1000, or other low-end Alpha series system.

If you wish to discuss costs and availability and parts and delivery,
please use the purchasing link at the OpenVMS website, or please contact
your HP reseller or HP representative.
