Tape device missing from configuration?

» close window

The Question is:

I have a MicroVAX 3400 with an attached TLZ06 DAT cartridge tape drive. The
backup log displays the error SYSTEM-W-NOSUCHDEV when the procedure executes
the init/media=compaction tape_1: userdi command. Tape_1: is the device name.
 I cannot mount the devic
e.

The monitor is not operational and I believe the video controller may be at
fault. Could this be related to the tape device fault (I'm not convinced)?

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have not had a successful backup now
 for a week.

Thanks.

The Answer is :

TAPE_1 is very likely a logical name, and not a device name.

A SCSI TLZ06 device will usually be configured as an MK-class device,
though details depend on the local configuration.

It is also possible that the system was rebooted minimally; without
having run the full system and site-specific startup procedures.

The OpenVMS Wizard would strongly recommend you review the OpenVMS
User's Guide and related materials, as it would appear you are not
particularly familiar with OpenVMS device naming and logical names.

The monitor and the video controller are not directly associated with
the configuration of the tape devices, nor with tape logical names.
The monitor on a MicroVAX 3400 series is typically a terminal, and
another terminal or a terminal emulator can often be substituted.
See the OpenVMS FAQ for details on configuring and operating a serial
console, and for details of the pinout of the MMJ connector and the
common adapters used with the console line of this system.

If this system was configured with a graphic (workstation) display,
please see the DECwindows troubleshooting information in the OpenVMS
  FAQ.

Please directly contact your software support organization for further
assistance, as details of the system and the hardware configuration
  will be required.
