PWS-au Intel SIO and ATA/ATAPI devices?

» close window

The Question is:

Hi Wizard!

I've got a 500au and installed VMS 7.3 on it, using a SCSI CDROM and H/D
attached to a Qlogic scsi card.

I also have an IBM IDE disk (a 16GB IBM DTTA 351680) hooked up to the on-board
IDE controller (an Intel SIO 82378), which shows up fine at boot time as DQA0:
 and in VMS as DVA0:

I'd like to mount the IDE disk for data purposes (I know I can't bootstrap from
it!) but whenever I try to init it I get a "medium is offline" error.

I've upgraded the SRM to the latest I could find on the site (
 ftp://ftp.digital.com/pub/DEC/Alpha/firmware/archive/digitalpw.html ) and the
OpenVMS PALcode is 1.20-16. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jim

The Answer is :

DVA0: is a floppy disk, not an ATA/ATAPI (IDE) disk device.

If you have actually targeted DQA0:, DQA1:, DQB0: or DQB1: (and the
particular DQ devices present depend on the configuration) then the
disk is misconfigured, failed, not configured, or otherwise incompatible
with the current OpenVMS ATAPI implementation.

In general, the Intel SIO 82378 device configuration found in your
system is not suited for operations with random ATA/ATAPI devices
-- please see the OpenVMS FAQ for related details on configuring
ATAPI CD devices (and in an unsupported fashion) on the Intel SIO
  peripheral controller.
