AlphaServer DS25 and third-party IDE CD-RW?

» close window

The Question is:

To the much respected OpenVMS Wizard:

We have a DQ device shown as type HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4480B. I can read the
VMS Doc Set but I am unable to use CDRECORD.COM to write to the CD. The Diag
 utility shows:

System Model AlphaServer DS25

Entry Type 96. Device Timeout

---- Device Profile ----
Unit $3$DQA0
Product Name RW/DVD GCC-4480B
Vendor HL-DT-ST

Can you give me any clue as to what I should look at next?

Thanks.

The Answer is :

The LG Electronics CD-RW ATAPI-based recording device and/or the
IDE bus is apparently misconfigured, or has otherwise failed.
Details and configuration requirements for the IDE bus are
largely dependent on the particular device(s) connected to the
  host IDE bus.

Please contact the organization supporting this hardware device
for assistance with its requirements, and for troubleshooting
assistance, or please contact the HP Hardware Services organization.
(As was stated in the introduction to asking a question, the
OpenVMS Wizard is not in a position to assist with hardware-level
  problems.)

Please ensure you have the current ECO kit for the integrated
CD recording tools, as well as all mandatory ECO kits for
OpenVMS. Also please ensure that the LD partition is marked
  with SET FILE/CACHING_ATTRIBUTE=NO_CACHING, pending availability
of updates to LDDRIVER. (There is a subtle incompatibility
between LD and XFC caching on V7.3-1 and V7.3-2, and this DCL
is a workaround that reduces exposure to the underlying cache
  coherency problem within LDDRIVER.)

For general information on recording CD and DVD media on OpenVMS,
please see the OpenVMS FAQ. Please consider using at least the
versions of the tools available on Freeware V6.0. For related
supporting details, also please see the third-party device
  information available in the FAQ.
